Sport was a major part of life within the Bata Community, in fact many young men were encouraged to join the Company because of the Sporting Facilities which were provided. The Sports field was very well kept and West Ham United Football Club would use it in the 60’s and 70’s for training sessions out of season. Part of this deal included a match between the Bata Team and West Ham, the winner usually being West Ham. It did not matter which sport you were interested in, wherever possible the facilities would be provided as it was felt that this helped to keep people healthy and therefore production was increased.
