The Autumn Open Day 2015 was very busy and lively. Some of those who attended had travelled a long way, including from the Midlands and other parts of the South East, to be there. Many locals turned up and it was great to say “hello” to old friends and first time visitors alike.

Two parties of chilldren from the local junior school came along as part of their history lessons and to find out about how people used to make shoes, the life of those who worked in a factory and industrial environment, and what it was like to live on the Bata estate in the last century. For some visitors, it was the first time they had been back to East Tilbury for several years and it was great that they were able to meet up with old acquaintances, school friends and work colleagues from the past – some of whom they hadn’t seen for many years.

All of those who came to the Open Day were able to see and discuss the latest items and photographs on display. Many of these triggered fond memories which led to more conversations. There was an opportunity for visitors to chat to our volunteers, who were able to do some research on the computer and within our records, and to help add further information to our own knowledge at the Bata Heritage Centre.
One of our visitors, Mrs Georgette Miller (née Hanak-Kutik), said “I am absolutely bowled over by the enormous work you have all carried out to achieve such an amazing archive. I thoroughly enjoyed the time with you.”

Another visitor, Mrs Gillian Todd (née Spencer) emailed to say “We all came away very impressed and full of good old memories of our childhood growing up on the estate. I’ve taken a lot of copies of the old photo’s that were displayed … I bought the book about Bata that my cousin Angela Rumsey had written – really interesting … Have put the next date for Heritage Day in my diary (and) would love to come back again.”
The next Open Day is planned for 13 April 2016.

Very touched by the entry on my wonderful visit to you – so sensitively linked to my parents. Very many thanks. I am looking forward to next April’s Open Day. Warmest best wishes to you ALL for a peaceful Christmas and a Happy New Year.
