JOHN ROSS PHILLIPSON, DFC

John Phillipson was a Warrant Officer in 89th Squadron R.A.F.

He was the son of Arthur Milner and Irene Houlden Phillipson of Chilwell, Nottinghamshire. In his will he left his effects, £170 6s to his father, Maurice.

John joined R.A.F. in June 1939, and killed in a flying accident in the Middle East  05 January 1943 aged 20.  Crashed 8 Miles East of Abu Sueir due to an engine failure when flying through a sand storm.

Before joining the forces he was a Junior Assistant in the Companies Sales at Brixton.

John was awarded the D.F.C.


DFC Citation – London Gazette 19/2/1943:883.
“Sgt Phillipson invariably displayed outstanding skill and courage during air operations, recently as an observer he participated in the destruction of three enemy aircraft. His determination and gallantry have been an example of the highest order”
