FREDERICK CHARLES TURNNIDGE
Frederick Turnidge (Turnnidge) was a Lance Corporal with the 1st/5th Queen’s Regiment (West Surrey). Service Number: 6018419
He was the son of Charles R and Annie J Turnnidge, husband of Hilda Florence nee. Foreman of the Rochester Shop.
Formerly of Department 640 of Supply Department.
His family live in Stanford le Hope and he was Organist at Mucking Church prior to the war.
Lance Corporal Turnidge is remembered by inscription in the Bible of St John the Baptist church at Mucking, Essex. The church is deconsecrated and is now a private residence, but such artefacts were removed and it is likely that the bible can now be found at All Saints Church in nearby Crays Hill.
The inscription reads:
To the Glory of God and in memory of Lance Corporal F.C. TURRNIDGE (sic)
Organist of this church Killed by enemy action September 8th 1941 At rest
Frederick died on Monday 8th September 1941, aged 22. It is stated in the Bata Record that he was killed in an air raid on the South East Coast where he was a member of an anti-aircraft gun crew throwing up a barrage at the raider when a bomb fell close to the gun killing the whole crew.
