ARTHUR CHARLES SMITH
Arthur Charles Smith was a Leading Seaman in the Royal Navy Submarine Division.
Service No : P/JX 167433
He was born on 30/01/1919 to William and Maud Smith.
Arthur married Marjorie Clara Smith, Nee Chittock in 1938 in the Billericay District.
He Joined Bata in 09/07/1935 from E.E Robinson he was a Shop Assistant.
Prior to signing up for service he worked in the factory spraying heels.
Arthur was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal while serving on submarine HMS Upright.
Arthur was serving on submarine HMS P-615 when it was sunk by u-boat U-123 and was killed on 18th April, 1943 age 24. .
He is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, unfortunately he is not on our War Memorial as we did not find out about him until the Refurbishment had been completed in 2013.
