LEONARD GEORGE ROMPEN
Leonard Rompen was a Guardsman in the 1st Bn. Irish Guards. Service No 2719803
He was the son of Victor and Nora Rompen and husband of Mary Patricia Rompen ( nee Doyle) of Dowlais, Glamorgan.
Leonard Rompen came originally from Durham lived at Linford and was employed in the Rubber Factory on the Callenders Department 301 for 18 months before joining the Army in December 1939. He was married at East Tilbury in 1942 in a double wedding with his sister. He was the first Bata casualty reported from the North African Campaign.
Leonard died on Tuesday 27th April 1943, age 23. A memorial service was held at East Tilbury Parish Church on July 4th 1943 to celebrate this man’s life.
